The US attacked LGBTQ people when they changed laws to allow hospitals, doctors, and healthcare insurance companies to refuse treatment to people based on sexuality or gender identity yesterday.
This, on the fourth anniversary of the Pulse shootings, of all nights. We also lost two black trans women in 24 hours this week. As we fight for legislative change, for a long-needed dismantling of the police departments that misgender and harass black and trans people, we also need cultural change.
The violence against these women was emboldened by the same pervasive lack of consequences for perpetrators of violence against Black and Black queer people. Black trans and gender non-conforming people are at the epicenter of state-sanctioned violence in the US, with resources for survival actively being cut and denied. It stops now!
