In the dark of the night of November 18th, 2013, developers whitewashed the historic NYC graffiti mecca 5Pointz, a site which featured the work of an estimated 1,500 artists from all over the city and around the world. The building owners, planning to turn the property into luxury condos, painted over the artworks in order to undermine legal efforts on the part of the artists to preserve the building and the cultural value of its collected imagery.
To mourn the loss of so much graffiti history, a candlelight vigil was held the following evening. The Illuminator attended with the People’s Pad (link to people’s pad) to allow the assembled artists to legally tag the building one last time.
